Property insurance against the risk of earthquake in Turkey is compulsory. Turkey is at risk
of earthquakes, but the main earthquake zone is not in the area where most foreigners
buy property. However, small earthquakes are frequent throughout southern
Turkey.
Multi-risk household policies are now available in Turkey - these cover the fabric of the building, its contents and any civil responsibility.
When considering an insurance policy make sure
- The level of cover is adequate
- Do not under-insure; just as in the UK if you are under-insured the company will not payout for the full extent of your loss.
- Take out cover for the full reconstruction of the building. (For apartments the buildings insurance should be included in your service charge.
- For the contents, make a detailed inventory and the estimate of the value of all furniture and possessions - remember to allow for items you take on holiday e.g. cameras
- If you use the property as holiday accommodation, you must specify you require a holiday policy, as the property will be empty for long periods.
- You will have higher premiums if you intend to let the property. Notify the insurance company.
